Designing a Chef’s Kitchen

Calling all chefs and foodies! Have you ever wondered what goes into designing a kitchen that caters to the needs of passionate cooks? Archipelago Hawaii’s got you covered! This month we’re taking a look at some of our favorite kitchen projects that are not only gorgeous—they’re fully functional for our food-loving homeowners.

Shorebreak

When tackling our Shorebreak project, our design team reconfigured the space to make it more functional for our homeowner chefs. With the husband working as the cook and wife serving as the prep cook, we designed two workspaces to cater to their distinct roles in the kitchen. In the main workstation, we placed the sink under the window with the cooktop to the left and the double ovens close by. The second workstation is equipped with a farmhouse sink and under-cabinet refrigerator drawers, a large built-in refrigerator, and pantry cabinet at the end of the room—perfect for prepping duties!

The new kitchen offers the homeowners not only a more practical cooking space, but also additional prep and storage options. An island separates the two workstations and provides extra prep space for each cook. We also placed the large built-in refrigerator and pantry cabinet close to the kitchen entrance to cater to the homeowners.

Island Tranquility

Our Island Tranquility project is the result of careful consideration of the homeowners’ needs and desires. The kitchen in particular reflects thoughtful design choices that were made to support the homeowners’ passion for cooking while catering to their individual needs. For example, the baker’s island with prep sink was lowered to accommodate one of the homeowners, who suffers from back and arm injuries. The new, customized countertop we installed allows her to cut at a level that doesn’t cause pain.

The kitchen also boasts a variety of unique design features that work together to enhance the homeowners’ cooking and baking experiences. The space is equipped with a soapstone countertop as well as a Grothouse wood bar top, which houses a convenient mini refrigerator and oven/microwave oven. Other handy features include a custom-made coffee bar with walnut Sollera cabinetry, Thermador integrated panel-ready appliances, and a walk-in pantry with built-ins.

Ethereal

Ethereal is one of our most recent projects, and boasts a variety of striking yet very practical features for homeowners who value their time in the kitchen. While the general layout of the existing space functioned decently for the homeowners, the kitchen still needed a much larger refrigerator and pantry. They also desired more prep space when cooking their meals.

Our design team addressed these needs by relocating the ovens and built-in coffee system to the adjacent wall, while creating a separate coffee bar area in the empty space. We also maximized the use of a very small island, which would’ve otherwise been too compact to be functional. We added a drop leaf extension to the island, which matches the beautiful walnut pass through the countertop and provides extra prep space for the homeowners to exercise their culinary expertise!
