Turquoise Beach Case Study

The objective of this kitchen remodel was to upgrade the design scheme while playing with the homeowner’s favorite color. While this beautiful Manoa cottage was already in wonderful condition, the homeowners desired a brighter, more refreshed design that incorporated turquoise and other beachy colors. The result was an innovative, modern kitchen boasting a colorful palette and sleek design.

The approach was to work within the kitchen’s existing layout while looking for creative ways to upgrade the design. One of the biggest challenges faced when tackling the remodel was the structural limitations, as the homeowners did not want to increase the footprint of the kitchen. Instead the redesign was restricted to working around the existing space’s walls, windows and doors. Brand new cabinets were also introduced and painted a fresh white shade, while striking Roxwell quartz countertops were installed throughout the kitchen. Standing in bold contrast to the Cambria “Oceanic Collection” countertops was the gorgeous Vihara NOWANNA Iridescent backsplash, courtesy of Sonoma Tilemakers. The dazzling backsplash served as a perfect complement to the darker, grainy quartz countertops, which were also slightly elevated to accommodate the tall homeowners.

When working with the existing windows, the challenge of positioning the new sink presented itself. As a result, the new Franke Kubus single bowl sink was positioned expertly so as to ensure both the sink and faucet with pullout cleared the low hanging windows. The space was also outfitted with new GE Profile Series appliances, including an oven/microwave combo and sleek, stainless steel French door refrigerator, as well as a Freedom electric cooktop, eco-friendly InSinkErator water dispenser, and luxury vinyl tile flooring. In addition to the natural lighting allowed by ample windows, Cree CR6 LED recessed lighting was also fashioned throughout the kitchen and dining room area.

While the existing kitchen already boasted a stunning wall cut-out to house a breakfast bar, this area was upgraded during the redesign process, fitted with new materials and design features to flow better with the space. Delicate Playa flush wall sconces with a soft, satin nickel finish were installed, as were Haiku series ceiling fans. The existing dining room chairs were also reupholstered with Duralee’s Caribbean fabric, giving the space a new tropical flair.

The resulting kitchen perfectly marries modern design with beachy style, while breathing life and color into the charming cottage.
